Assembly elections: Tamil Nadu’s day of reckoning

The bill giving 10.5% reservation to vanniyars within the quota for OBCs was passed just hours before the election date was announced and fasttracked into an act with assent from the governor. Now, it has turned into a double edged sword for the AIADMK and the-PMK even in the vanniyar-dominated northern districts. They fear other communities will be alienated in a region where rival DMK is strong.
