A public interest litigation has been filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras high court seeking a direction to the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR&CE) department to do away with the post of thakkars/ executive officers at temples managed by the HR & CE and appoint a board of trustees -- whose members should include a woman and a person from the SC/ST community -- to manage the temples, as stated in the HR & CE Act.
