Temple for J Jayalalithaa, MGR in Madurai
T Kunnathur is a nondescript village on Madurai-Rajapalayam Road, 40km from Madurai. Almost overnight, a sparkling new temple has appeared, about 800 metres from the outer ring of the village. This is no god’s temple. Planned over a short period, the shrine has been built for former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and her mentor and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran just months before the assembly election. Villagers believe that the temple, inaugurated on Saturday, would help place the hamlet prominently on the political and tourist map.
